PROJECT SUMMARY:

 

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)  is currently working on a design project at State Road (S.R.) 5/ U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard between NE 55 Terrace and  NE 58 Street. This project includes the installation of a signal controlled mid-block crosswalk along S.R. 5/ U.S.1/Biscayne Boulevard, pedestrian signage and safety signals.

FDOT is committed to ensuring the State’s infrastructure serves residents, businesses, and visitors to meet their current and future transportation needs. Benefits of this project include:

 

COMMUNITIES

 

  • Installing signal controlled mid-block crosswalk along S.R. 5/ U.S.1/ Biscayne Boulevard between NE 55 Terrace and NE 58 Street 

  • Proposing light pole on the south side

  • Repaving and restriping the roadway


 

 

SAFETY

 

  • Installing pedestrian signage, pedestrian signals with count-down displays, and sidewalk curb ramps with detectable warning surfaces for the proposed mid-block crossing 
  • Installing stop bars and “Stop Here for Pedestrians" Signage 

  • Installing “No Pedestrian Crossing” and “Use Crosswalks” signs to direct pedestrians to cross at proposed mid-block crossing 

  • Installing a new mast arm with signal heads serving the proposed mid-block crossing 

  • Extending the median nose to avoid the left-turn movement from NE 57 Street into S.R. 5/U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard southbound

  • FDOT plans proactively to build sustainable infrastructure that can adapt to Florida’s unique climate demands 

 


 

SUPPLY CHAIN 

  • FDOT invests in roadways and transportation facilities to facilitate the movement of goods that serve our community and beyond 

 

TECHNOLOGY

  • Install new lighting to serve the proposed mid-block crosswalk

 


 

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

  • This project creates opportunities for contractors, which results in economic benefits for workers and the community

 


                                                                                                             

MAINTENANCE OF TRAFFIC

During construction, temporary lane closures will affect traffic. Access to adjacent businesses and neighborhoods will be maintained. Pedestrian detours will be established with clear signage.

FDOT will host an in-person and online Public Meeting for those interested in learning more about this design project.
