About
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began a construction project on November 12, 2025, along State Road (S.R.) 5/U.S. 1/Overseas Highway from MM 31.4 to MM 31.5 on Big Pine Key in Monroe County.
Travel lanes are shifted, a temporary protective barrier wall is in place, and the speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during the day, as well as at night. Pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted on the roadway in the construction area, and must use the detour via Avenue A and Beach Drive.
FDOT is committed to ensuring the state’s infrastructure serves residents, businesses, and visitors, to meet their needs now and in the future. Key areas include safety, resiliency, supply chain, technology, and workforce development. The following benefits are included in this project:
COMMUNITIES
- Improving the roadway to help preserve the endangered Key Deer population
RESILIENCY
- Reconstructing the Key Deer Grate structure for long-term durability and performance to protect both drivers and wildlife
SAFETY
- Reducing wildlife on the roadway helps prevent collisions
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
- This project creates opportunities for contractors, which results in positive economic benefits for the workers and the community
