Access Management

The careful planning of the location and design of driveways, median openings, interchanges and street connections in order to maximize safety and traffic flow. Please note that access management features are implemented during construction but the locations and specifications of these are developed prior to construction.

Consultant Construction Engineer and Inspection (CCEI)

A professional engineering firm hired as a consultant by the department to manage FDOT construction projects.

Drainage

The system designed to remove storm water from the roadway efficiently for enhanced safety. Please note that FDOT is only responsible for drainage on the roadway and not on private property.

Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)

A permanent electronic sign placed on state roads to provide motorists with real time traffic information.

Friction Course

The topmost layer of asphalt on a roadway.

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)

ITS makes transportation safety and mobility communication better and increases productivity through the use of technology. South Florida ITS includes traffic cameras, electronic message boards, a traffic management center, Road Ranger Service Patrols, SunPass electronic toll collection and SunGuide 511 Traveler Information Service.

Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)

A specific plan that indicates what type of traffic set up, lane closures and, if necessary, a description of detours that will take place during construction. Please note that MOT plans usually include a time schedule in which these plans will be implemented.

Milling and Resurfacing

The operation that involves removing the top few inches of asphalt on a roadway, replacing it with new asphalt and restriping the roadway. This work is done to maintain and enhance the smoothness of the roadway.

Portable Message Board

A small portable electronic sign placed along the roadway to provide motorists with timely notification about lane closures, detours, and more.
